SCIENCE IMMERSION PROGRAM
Provides an inquiry/problem-based approach of the scientific process using the abundant natural resources in Costa Rica. Students are engaged in hands-on labs and analysis in different ecological environments of Costa Rica. They discover important concepts related to biology, earth and environmental science, and the relationship between culture and science.
Activities Include:
- Organic Coffee Farm - diversity count, instituting soil erosion techniques and monitoring carbon production
- Leatherback Preservation Project (March – July) - assisting with turtle nesting, relocation to protected beach nursery, monitor sand temperatures and help with hatchling release
- Volcano Poas - acid rain lab to observe effect on plants, taking ph readings of lagoon, and soil layer analysis from volcanic rim
- Palo Verde National Reserve on Nicoya Peninsula to study bird and insect behavior and habitat
- Miravalles Volcano and Renewable Energy - investigate production plants of geo-thermal, wind, and hydroelectric resources
- Carara National Park and Playa Esterillos - deforestation analysis, diversity count on coast line, observe crocodile and scarlet macaws behavior
